Intel calls on motherboard manufacturers to stop automatically overclocking processors
Intel has officially acknowledged the problem of incompatibility of its processors with NVIDIA graphics cards, caused by incorrect motherboard settings that disable overheating and overload protection to provide better performance.
Processor stability
Causes of problems
Intel has cited motherboard manufacturers for disabling thermal protection and power limits to achieve a higher processor frequency, ignoring Intel's recommendations. These settings are actually becoming standard for overclocking.
Fault Analysis
Studies of damaged processors have shown changes in the minimum operating voltage in some components, which may involve operation outside of the conditions specified by Intel.
BIOS Settings
Most problem reports come from users with unlocked motherboards and overclocking . Boards with 600/700 series chipsets often have default BIOS settings that disable overload and thermal protection, such as:
- Disable Overcurrent Protection (CEP)
- Enable IccMax Unlimited bit
- Disable Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB) and/or Enhanced Thermal Velocity Boost (eTVB)
Additional risks
Other parameters that may increase the risk of system instability:
- Disabling C-States
- Using Windows Ultimate Performance Mode
- Increasing PL1 and PL2 beyond Intel's recommended values
Intel Recommendations
Intel requests that system and motherboard manufacturers provide end users with a default BIOS profile that matches the settings recommended by Intel. The company strongly recommends that the default BIOS settings ensure operation within the recommended parameters.
Additionally, Intel recommends that motherboard manufacturers warn users about using any unlocked or overclocked features.
Intel continues to investigate the issue to determine the root cause and will provide additional information in May 2024.
Glossary
- Intel is the largest manufacturer of microprocessors and other computer components.
- NVIDIA is a leading GPU and graphics card company.
- Igor's Lab is a popular German site dedicated to technology and computer hardware.
- CEP (Current Excursion Protection) - protection against current surges in Intel processors.
- TVB (Thermal Velocity Boost) - Intel technology for dynamically increasing the processor clock speed at low temperatures.

It's such a shame that motherboard manufacturers ignore Intel's recommendations and disable processor protection in order to achieve higher speeds 😩 Don't they realize that this can lead to serious problems with system stability?

I agree, this is very irresponsible on the part of the manufacturers 😕 It seems that the thirst for maximum performance is overshadowing common sense. But consumers may suffer due to such actions.

Well, why are you so worried? 😏 Overclocking is fun for real geeks! If you want to get the most out of your hardware, you have to take risks. But let Intel not panic; everything will settle down over time.

Again these youth fads 🙄 Why chase the latest trends if you can safely work on stable and proven equipment? This overclocking and overclocking is complete nonsense for geeks.

I think that manufacturers should listen to Intel's recommendations 👍 After all, they know better how to ensure the stability of their processors. And if users want to overclock, then let them disable the protection themselves at their own peril and risk.

Oh, that Grumpy, he’s always grumbling 😂 Don’t pay attention, he’s just jealous of our youth and energy! And we will push our systems to the maximum, because there is only one life 💪

Actually, I agree with Maria 🤔 Safety and stability are more important than speed. But manufacturers could add an overclocking profile to the BIOS for advanced users, with appropriate warnings.

Good idea, Anna! 👏 Then everyone will be able to choose for themselves between performance and stability. And most importantly, everything will be the responsibility of the user, not the manufacturer.
