What does the "Big Mac index" mean?
The Big Mac Index was created by The Economist in 1986. This is an unofficial index used to compare the purchasing power of different currencies. The index is intended to demonstrate the theory of purchasing power parity, which states that exchange rates should ensure the same value of the same basket of goods and services (in this case, a hamburger) in different countries in the long run.
"Burgeronomics" is not an accurate method of measuring currency undervaluation, but it helps to understand the theory of exchange rates. The "Big Mac Index" has become a global standard and has been included in several economics textbooks and is also the subject of academic research.
It is worth noting that there are many other methods of evaluating the purchasing power of currencies that can give different results.
