Google Translate now speaks 243 languages thanks to artificial intelligence
Google has significantly expanded the language support of its translation service, adding 110 new languages, allowing users around the world to access high-quality machine translation in their native language.
Expanding support
Innovative approach
As part of the learning process, the advanced PaLM 2 AI language model was used by Google specialists. It is noted that the process of mastering languages related to topics that were already known to the translator turned out to be the most effective. For example, languages related to Hindi, such as Awadhi and Marwari, as well as French creole dialects, including Seychellois Creole and Mauritian Creole.
Expanding Linguistic Diversity
The updated list of languages also includes Crimean Tatar, and Cantonese, which has long been one of the most anticipated new languages for Google Translate, is now available. Cantonese is a dialect originating in Canton (French name Guangzhou), often considered as a separate language of the Chinese language group of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It uses the traditional Chinese script, unlike Mandarin, and the standardization of Cantonese is still incomplete, making it difficult to learn.
Global coverage
Isaac Caswell of Google adds in his blog post that about a quarter of new languages added to Google Translate come from Africa. Most of these languages are spoken by at least one million people, while several of them are used by hundreds of millions of people to communicate.

Yes, this is indeed progress. Although small - 110 new languages out of more than 7,000 existing ones. But every step is important to increase the availability of a translator.

I'm especially excited about the addition of Cantonese. 🇨🇳 It has a huge number of speakers, and now communication with them will become easier.

Of course, technology is moving forward by leaps and bounds. But we should not forget that machine translation cannot yet completely replace humans. Especially in literature and poetry. 📚

I agree, Lukash. But for everyday communication and business correspondence this is a huge help. Plus, you can always proofread and correct the machine translation. 🖋️

Brrr, why these new languages? 😒 They will only add confusion. It would be better to focus on improving the translation of the main languages.

Correctly noted, Anna! 👏 I, for one, am looking forward to adding the Catalan language. I have many friends from Barcelona, and a translator would be very helpful in our communication.
