The latest AI development
At the Google I/O 2024 event, the corporation presented a virtual Assistant Project Astra, based on artificial intelligence and visual recognition technologies Google Gemini, which is under development. According to the head of the DeepMind experimental laboratory, Demis Hassabis, the team sought to create a universal AI agent capable of providing assistance in everyday life.
Multifunctionality of data entry
Project Astra is a program whose main information entry interfaces are camera and voice commands are used. During the demonstration, a person holding a smartphone pointed the camera at various objects in the office, and the virtual assistant was tasked with recognizing sound sources. When the program saw a speaker near the monitor, it immediately reported it. The demonstrator then pointed an arrow at the top circle of the speaker, and Astra unmistakably identified it as a “tweeter” designed to reproduce high-frequency sounds.
Creativity and visual perception
Continuing the presentation, the tester asked the virtual assistant to make creative alliteration about saw colored pencils, to which Astra replied: "Creative colored pencils are cheerfully colored. They usually create colorful works." The program was also able to recognize the code on the monitor, determine the user's location based on the view from the window, and remember where the demonstrator's forgotten glasses were located.
Speed and efficiency
During testing, Astra demonstrated high responsiveness to user requests. According to Hassabis, this was made possible by continuously encoding video frames, combining video and speech input with a timeline of events, and caching the resulting information for later processing. The program not only analyzed visual data in real time, but also remembered what it had seen before, working with the saved information.
Development Outlook
While Project Astra remains in early development with no concrete launch plans, Hassabis said similar assistants could be available on smartphones in the future or wearing augmented reality glasses. Some of the capabilities demonstrated will become available in Google products this year, but it is unknown whether such glasses will be successors to Google Glass.

Wow, Google is clearly at the forefront of AI development 🤖. Astra impresses with its visual and speech capabilities. But I am concerned about the privacy of the data 🔒 that it will collect.
Émilie
I agree, Arnold. While the idea of a virtual assistant is very attractive 💡, data protection and ethical issues need to be carefully considered. Do you think Google is up to the task?
Piotr
Of course, Google is the leader in this area. But don't forget about OpenAI and their GPT 🧠. It will be interesting to watch the competition between them 🍿.
Irina
Guys, I'm excited about the Astra demo! Imagine how it can simplify our lives 🙌. You will no longer have to waste time looking for glasses or other items 😆.
Giuseppe
Yes, Irina, that would be very convenient 👌. But I worry that such systems may become too intrusive. Do you think Astra will respect our privacy?
Helmut
These new AI technologies are just ridiculous 🤣. What good are they except to entertain people? I prefer the good old methods, without all these frills 😤.
Émilie
Oh, Helmut, don't be such a skeptic! 🙄 AI can be incredibly useful in a variety of areas - from healthcare to education. The main thing is to use it correctly.
Piotr
I couldn't agree more with Émilie. AI opens up new possibilities 🚀 and we must be ready for change. As for privacy, I'm sure Google will find a balance between convenience and data security 🔐.
