Google Pixel 9: Revolutionizes weather forecasting with new app
Google is developing a new standalone weather app for the upcoming Pixel 9 smartphones, featuring a minimalist design that matches the style of the latest Android version. Despite the recent redesign of the weather section in the Google app, the company is creating an additional program with similar functionality.
Google Weather App
New Pixel App
Google is preparing to release a separate weather tracking application that will be pre-installed on the upcoming Pixel 9 smartphones. This software is distinguished by strict adherence to the aesthetics of the latest version of the Android operating system and an emphasized minimalist interface.
Interestingly, last year the company already carried out a major design update to the existing weather section in the Google app. Therefore, releasing another program with similar functionality seems like an unexpected step. However, Google is not new to following the strategy of "many applications with the same purpose."
Features of the new application
The new development will become part of the Pixel Weather ecosystem, which was previously used exclusively for displaying weather data on watches. Initially, the application will only be available on Pixel 9 as a pre-installed app, but in the future it is planned to expand it to other models of the Pixel line.
Resource Android Authority received exclusive access to the working version of the program. Although the final version may differ, the current version looks quite complete and gives an idea of the concept of the new product.
Design and functionality
The minimalism of the application immediately attracts attention. The background design is a simple gradient, smoothly moving from the top of the screen to the bottom and changing the color scheme depending on the current weather conditions. The centerpiece is a large display of the current temperature with an icon illustrating the weather situation instead of the traditional degree symbol.
Under the temperature indicator there are the usual information blocks: hourly and ten-day forecasts, data on humidity, sunrise and sunset times, wind, visibility, UV index and barometric pressure. It is noteworthy that the user can change the location of these blocks at his discretion.
Navigating to the ten-day forecast opens a similar widget-based interface, albeit with fewer elements and a fixed arrangement of information cards.
The location selection screen remains concise but puts more emphasis on displaying current weather conditions and temperatures compared to the previous design.
One of the shortcomings of the new program can be considered the lack of animation effects, at least in the current version. While the existing Google weather app includes some animations.

Wow, Google surprises again! 🌤️ I wonder how different this app will be from the built-in weather forecast. Has anyone seen the screenshots yet?
Hans
Minimalism sounds cool, but I'm more interested in the accuracy of the forecasts. Isabella, do you think they will improve weather forecasting algorithms?
Isabella
Hans, I hope so! 🤞 It would be great if they added more detailed data on air quality and allergens. This is really useful for city residents.

Honestly, what intrigued me the most was the ability to move cards around. This can be useful for personalization. I wonder if the settings will be saved when changing devices? 🤔

It's all nonsense. Why do we need another weather app? I have a good old thermometer outside the window, and that’s enough for me. All these newfangled things only distract from real life.

Victor, I understand your skepticism, but technology can be very helpful. For example, when planning trips or for people with weather sensitivity. And the gradient background sounds nice! 🌈

Sofia is right! By the way, I was surprised by the lack of animations. I hope this is not the final version. The dynamic interface makes use more pleasant, especially when it comes to the weather ⛈️➡️☀️

I agree with Hans! Although minimalism is cool, a little animation wouldn't hurt. It would also be great if the application integrated with other Google services, for example, a calendar for planning events taking into account the weather. 📅🌦️
