GitHub Copilot: a revolution in AI assistants for developers
GitHub expands Copilot by giving developers a choice of AI models from leading companies, and introduces a new tool, Spark, for building web apps using natural language.
GitHub Copilot update
Multi-model support
A major update to the GitHub Copilot tool was announced at GitHub Universe 2024. Now developers will be able to use various artificial intelligence models when working with this assistant for code completion and programming. The list of available models will include developments from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI.
Available models
Users of the GitHub Copilot web version or its VS Code integration will be able to select the Claude 3.5 model. There are also plans to add support for Gemini 1.5 Pro in the near future. In addition, the GPT-4o, o1-preview and o1-mini models from OpenAI are expected to appear. This functionality will allow developers to switch between models in Copilot Chat to find the best solution for specific problems.
Management View
GitHub CEO, Thomas Domke, emphasizes the importance of this update: "It is impossible to create a universal model that fits all scenarios. Developers strive to use the tools that best suit their needs when creating projects."
Innovative Tool Spark
GitHub has also introduced a new tool called Spark. It is designed for creating web applications using natural language. Spark uses OpenAI and Anthropic models to generate real-time app previews. Experienced programmers can directly edit the code, while beginners will be able to create applications solely using text commands.
Spark Features
Once you create a program in Spark, you can run it on a variety of devices, including computers, tablets, and smartphones. Users can also share their projects, allowing others to modify and create new programs based on their work.

Wow, GitHub Copilot now has multi-model support! 🚀 This is a breakthrough for developers. I wonder how this will affect coding efficiency?
Sophie
I agree, Ethan! It's especially cool that you can choose between Claude, Gemini and GPT. Each model has its own strengths. I think this will greatly expand Copilot's capabilities.
Hans
But it seems to me that this is all nonsense. Why do we need so many models? Just confusion. Previously, they coded just fine without these bells and whistles. 😒
Isabella
Hans, but different tasks require different approaches! I can already imagine how I will use GPT for creative tasks, and Claude for analytics. It's super convenient! 💡
Pierre
What about Spark? Sounds intriguing. Creating web applications through text commands is a dream for those who are just starting out! 🌟
Ethan
Pierre, exactly! Spark can be a great tool for rapid prototyping. I wonder how flexible code editing will be for experienced developers?
Maria
Guys, don't you think that this could lead to some dependence on AI in development? 🤔 Although, on the other hand, this will clearly speed up many processes.
Sophie
Maria, I understand your concerns. But I see more opportunities in this than threats. AI will not replace developers, but rather will enhance our abilities. The main thing is to use these tools wisely! 💪
