Demographic portrait of gamers
Portal DOU conducted an analysis of gaming preferences among Ukrainian IT specialists. The results revealed interesting patterns, including a relationship between gaming activity and wage levels.
The distribution of gamers by marital status is curious: the largest proportion of gamers (about 60%) is observed among those who are in a civil marriage. At the same time, married professionals demonstrate the least gaming activity.
Age analysis shows that the most active gamers are IT specialists under 30, while employees over 35 play much less often.
Professional distribution
Among various IT specialties, game designers, artists/animators and system administrators show the greatest inclination towards games.
It is interesting to note that almost half of senior managers (CTO, COO, CEO , founders) are also active video game players. Their gaming activity exceeds that of testers, managers, data science specialists, marketers and HR specialists.
Gaming Platform Preferences
Most IT professionals (over 43%) use multiple platforms for gaming. Among individual devices, the clear leader is the PC (40%), followed by the PlayStation (about 12%). Xbox and mobile devices are less popular, but users of these platforms have the highest median salaries.
There is an interesting correlation between the age of IT specialists and the choice of gaming platform. The youngest and oldest employees prefer PCs. The highest median age is typical for fans of mobile games. Xbox and PlayStation, although they compete with each other, do not show significant differences in the age preferences of users. However, the oldest PlayStation fan is 61 years old, while the maximum age for Xbox users is 43 years old.
The survey also included owners of rare or unusual devices such as PSP, VR headsets or Playdate (seven respondents in total). More than 2.5% of surveyed IT professionals have a Steam Deck.

Interesting statistics! 🤔 It turns out that cohabitation and gaming go hand in hand. Maybe this is due to the fact that they have more free time?
Hans
Mila, perhaps. But what surprises me more is that those who play on Xbox and mobile devices earn more. Maybe this is some special category of IT specialists? 🤑
Sophie
But I’m wondering why married people play less? Perhaps family responsibilities take up a lot of time. Although, my gamer husband would not agree with me 😄
Giovanni
Sophie, maybe the fact is that married people are more responsible about their work and career? Although I myself am married and sometimes like to play on the PlayStation 🎮
Olaf
Some kind of nonsense. Why even waste time on these toys? It would be better if they worked more or read a book. Young people are completely out of touch with reality.
Mila
Olaf, games are not only entertainment, but also a way to relax after work. Many gamers are successful in their careers and personal lives. Don't judge by stereotypes 😊

And I'm surprised that PC is still in the lead. I thought consoles had long since overtaken computers in popularity. Apparently, IT specialists have their own specifics 🖥️
Hans
Pierre, that's logical. Many developers use powerful PCs for work, so why not play on it too? Plus, more opportunities for modding and game customization 🛠️
