Cause of conflict
20-year-old Edward Kang, from New Jersey, was accused of assaulting another player with whom he had an argument in the online multiplayer game ArcheAge. Unable to reach an agreement in virtual reality, Kang decided to meet his opponent in person, traveling 1,600 kilometers to Fernandina Beach in Florida.
Preparing to attack
Upon arriving in Fernandina Beach, Kang stopped at the Ocean Coast Hotel, where he purchased a flashlight and a hammer. He then went to the house of his opponent, Zachary Dean, with whom he had a conflict.
Attack and aftermath
Dressed in black clothing, gloves and a mask, Kang entered Dean's home and attacked him with a hammer, causing serious head injuries to the victim. When Dean left the room to visit the bathroom, he saw Kang standing with a hammer "in a waiting striking position." A fight ensued, in which Dean’s stepfather intervened, having heard cries for help. Together they were able to restrain the attacker until the police arrived.
During the attack, a large amount of blood was left in the house. Dean suffered serious head injuries, but fortunately they were not life-threatening. After receiving medical assistance, he was released home.
Arrest and Charges
Kang was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary. When asked about the motives for his actions, he replied that the victim was “a bad person on the Internet.”
The game that caused this incident, ArcheAge, will be shut down in North America due to dwindling player numbers.
