Artificial intelligence analysis
Researchers used artificial intelligence technology to study paintings sold online eBay site. During the analysis, about 40 paintings were discovered that were presented as original masterpieces by famous masters, but in fact were fakes. Among the counterfeit works were works passed off as works by Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, prices for which ranged from 150 to 600 thousand US dollars.
Likely fakes at high prices
One of the paintings was advertised as an original painting by a French artist - impressionist Claude Monet entitled “Forest with a Stream” and was valued by the seller at an impressive sum of 600 thousand dollars. Another painting, for which they asked for 165 thousand dollars, was positioned as the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. These and a number of other paintings were recognized as fake by artificial intelligence.
Reaction of eBay and sellers
After journalists from The Guardian contacted the seller of Renoir , living in Florida, the page with the posted painting was removed from the eBay website. However, in his commentary, the seller claimed that he does not sell fakes. The seller, who was trying to sell the supposedly original Claude Monet work, is based in Millersburg, Ohio, and did not respond to requests from reporters.
eBay states that posting counterfeits or unauthenticated copies is prohibited. In a response to the Guardian, representatives of the platform said that multi-layered technologies are used to verify paintings, including artificial intelligence and experts.

Wow! Just recently I was thinking about buying a painting on the Internet 🤯 Now I will be more attentive to the description and the seller.

I wonder if the sellers even realize that they will be exposed? The prices they ask for are quite high 😳 Aren’t they scared?

I believe that the fakes were quite skillful, since the AI was only able to recognize them with a 95% probability 🤔 It’s a pity that eBay does not respond to requests from experts.

Bah, those fancy AI things again 😒 In my time, we just went to the gallery and bought paintings personally from the artist. There was no need for all these inventions!

It's a pity that eBay ignores the experts 😔 I think for such a serious issue they should combine human and AI efforts to reduce the risk of errors.

Can you imagine how offensive it is for a buyer if for years he was proud of a “Renoir work” purchased for crazy money, and then it turns out that it is a fake? 🤨 I hope there will be fewer such cases.

Even if the seller did not suspect a fake, he must still be responsible for his goods 👀 You can’t be so careless when it comes to such amounts!
