Historical legacy of the Cold War
Near Sedbergh, UK, an unusual lot is being prepared for sale - a nuclear shelter built in the 1950s. Evoking the atmosphere of the Fallout games, this object will be offered for auction with a starting price of £15,000 to £20,000.
The compact nuclear bunker, created by the Royal Observation Corps (ROC), is located in the picturesque rural area of Cumbria, England. The set includes not only the underground structure itself, but also an adjacent plot of land with a parking space and several above-ground buildings.
Purpose and history of the site
This shelter is part of an extensive network of similar structures erected throughout the UK in the 50s years of the last century. Their main task was to monitor enemy aircraft and register possible nuclear strikes. With the end of the Cold War era in the early 1990s, most of these facilities were decommissioned.
A representative from SDL Property Auctions explains: “This particular building is one of set, built in the 1950s. It was designed as a secure facility for three observers who could survive a nuclear attack and report on nuclear explosions. They had a two-week supply of food and water, a landline, and a telephone line that still functions. , which allows you to connect to the Internet if desired.”
Design features and condition
The bunker, partially hidden by vegetation, is accessible through a lockable metal hatch and equipped with a 12-meter metal ladder . Despite its considerable age, the interior is in good condition thanks to recent renovations by the previous owner.
It is worth noting that the room is not recommended for people suffering from claustrophobia due to lack of windows and natural light. The bunker does not have amenities such as a bathroom or running water, but it is quite suitable for a short stay. Inside there is seating, a wood stove, storage space for supplies and fuel, and a dumpster.
Auction and prospects
For interested parties: bidding will begin on July 25 at 9:00 local time. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of history that can find new uses in the modern world.

What a find! 🤯 I wonder if anyone will actually buy this bunker? I would love to have a Fallout themed party there.
Sophie
Liam, sounds cool! But I'm more interested in historical value. Imagine how many secrets this place can hold. I would turn it into a Cold War museum.
Hans
Sophie, great idea with the museum! And I would use it as an office for remote work. It’s quiet, no one bothers you, and you can connect to the Internet. True, we will have to resolve the issue with the bathroom... 🚽
Isabella
Guys, don't you think this is a great place to film a movie or TV series? The atmosphere there is definitely amazing. I would definitely watch a show like this! 🎬
Viktor
It's all nonsense. Why waste money on an old bunker? It would be better if these funds were used for something useful. The youth have gone completely crazy; they just want to have fun and play with toys.
Liam
Viktor, don't be so harsh! This is part of history. As for games, they can also be educational. The same Fallout instilled in many people an interest in the history of the Cold War.
Amelia
But I'm thinking about practicality. In these turbulent times, having a personal bunker can be very useful. Although the price, of course, bites... 💸 I wonder if bargaining is appropriate?
Hans
Amelia, I agree! Maybe we can chip in and buy it together? There will be our common refuge in case of an apocalypse. At the same time, we’ll throw Liam’s party and open the Sophie Museum! 😄
