Revival of the Chigirinsk NPP: Energoatom launches a large-scale project with a capacity of 4.4 GW
NNEGC Energoatom resumes construction of the Chigirinskaya NPP with four power units using American AP1000 technology , which will be a significant contribution to Ukraine’s energy security and its post-war reconstruction.
Revival of nuclear energy
New life of the Chigirinsk NPP
NNEGC Energoatom announced the resumption of the project for the construction of the Chigirinsk nuclear power plant. The unfinished facility, located near Chihyryn in the Cherkasy region, will be equipped with four American-made AP1000 power units, each with a capacity of 1.1 GW.
History and prospects
Construction of the Chigirinskaya NPP and the city of nuclear scientists Orbit began in Soviet times, but was suspended in 1989 . The station is located near the Kremenchug reservoir. It is planned not only to complete the construction of the nuclear power plant itself, but also to complete the Orbit. The Chigirinsky City Council has already given the green light to the development of a land management project and allocated more than 38 hectares of land for the use of Energoatom.
Energoatom's ambitious plans
The head of NAEK Energoatom, Petr Kotin, announced his intention to turn Orbit into one of the most modern towns, comparable to Neteshin, Yuzhnoukrainsk or Varash. He emphasized that the successful implementation of these plans would make a significant contribution to post-war reconstruction and strengthening the country's energy security. The introduction of advanced nuclear technologies, he said, will allow Ukraine to become a leader in the field of nuclear energy, with unique experience and its own technological solutions.
Nuclear Power Expansion
As part of strengthening the energy security of Ukraine, a decision was also made to build the 5th and 6th units of the Khmelnitsky NPP using American technology. Westinghouse's AP1000 design is a pressurized water reactor with a dual-loop cooling system, advanced passive safety features, and an emphasis on cost-effectiveness in both construction and operation.

Wow, what grandiose plans! 🤩 Four new AP1000 units are a huge step forward for the Ukrainian energy sector. I wonder how quickly they can implement such a large-scale project?
Hans
Yes, Olivia, that's really impressive! AP1000 technology is considered one of the safest and most effective. But I'm more interested in the restoration of the city of Orbit. Can you imagine how cool it will be for nuclear scientists to live in a modern town? 😎
Sophie
Hans, I agree! Orbit can become a real technology hub. Did you know that the AP1000 uses passive safety systems? This means that even if there is a loss of power, the reactor will be able to shut down safely without human intervention. Cool, right? 🤓
Carlos
Guys, don't you think this is too ambitious? 🤔 4 blocks of 1.1 GW each is a huge investment. Do you think the project will pay off?
Viktor
Oh, again these loud statements and projects. They built and built, but they didn’t finish it. And now it’s back to old times. You'll see, nothing good will come of this. They will just waste their money, as always.
Olivia
Carlos, I think it's very beneficial in the long run. Nuclear power plants have been operating for decades, providing stable and clean energy. And Viktor, don’t be such a pessimist! 😉 Technology does not stand still, and this project could become a breakthrough for the whole country.
Hans
I agree with Olivia! In addition, this is not just an energy project, but also a social one. Imagine how many jobs the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant and a new city will create! 💪

This is also a chance for Ukraine to become a leader in nuclear energy. The introduction of advanced technologies and training of specialists is great! 🚀 I hope the project is implemented successfully and we can all be proud of this achievement.
