Energoatom and Holtec produce components of small modular reactors in Ukraine
Ukraine and the American company Holtec International have entered into agreements to create production facilities for the manufacture of components of small modular reactors and spent nuclear fuel storage systems in the country.
Cooperation between nuclear giants
Joint production of components
Ukrainian state nuclear power plant operator Energoatom and American nuclear technology developer Holtec International signed an agreement to launch the production of components for small modular reactors. According to the document, capacities will be created in Ukraine for the production of nuclear systems, structures and components for this type of reactor, as well as systems for storing and transporting spent nuclear fuel.
Expanding cooperation
The agreement also covers other areas of application of nuclear energy in Ukraine and the region. Previously, the companies already had successful experience in cooperation - a Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (CSSFS) was built in Ukraine with the participation of Holtec. This made it possible to abandon the export of spent fuel to Russia and save about $200 million annually.
Localization of production
In November 2023, Energoatom and Holtec agreed to create Ukraine plant for the production of containers for storing spent fuel at the Central Storage Facility. Previously they were made in the USA. Thus, an important segment of the nuclear industry will be localized on the territory of Ukraine.
Glossary
- Energoatom is the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine, the operator of all operating nuclear power plants in the country.
- Holtec International is an American company, developer of nuclear technologies and equipment.
- Small modular reactors are a promising type of low-power nuclear reactors manufactured in a modular manner.
- TsSFSF - Centralized storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Ukraine.

Phew, those fashionable things of yours again! Nuclear reactors are a dangerous thing, better go back to good old coal and wood. 😠

It’s good that now storage containers will be produced in Ukraine, and not imported from the USA. This will create new jobs and support local industry. 🏭
