Kyiv is melting: Where in the capital the temperature reaches +65°C
New temperature records have been set in Ukraine caused by abnormal heat. Measurements show extreme heating of various surfaces in urban environments, creating uncomfortable conditions for residents.
Abnormal heat in Ukraine
Record temperatures in the capital
The unusually hot summer of 2024 brought Ukraine a series of temperature records. In mid-July, meteorologists recorded unprecedented indicators in a number of regions of the country, including Kyiv.
According to the Boris Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory, on July 13, the capital of Ukraine installed two temperature record. The maximum air temperature reached 35.4°C, exceeding the previous record of 1936 by 1.3°C. The average daily temperature was 29.0°C, which is 0.7°C higher than the 1951 record and 8.3°C higher than the climate norm.
Triple record and extreme performance
On July 14, the situation worsened: three temperature records were already recorded in Kyiv. The minimum temperature did not fall below 22.7°C, which is 1.6°C above the 1951 record. The maximum temperature reached 35.9°C, exceeding the previous record by 2.7°C. The average daily temperature was a record 29.2°C, which is 1.8°C higher than in 1951 and 8.2°C higher than the climate norm. Since the beginning of July, ten temperature records have already been set in the capital.
Heating of urban surfaces
The Mystoznavstvo community conducted a study of the temperature of various surfaces in public spaces in Kyiv. The results of measurements carried out using the Benetech GM321 infrared pyrometer were shocking.
Paving slabs heat up to +37°C in the shade and up to +57° C in the sun. The asphalt surface of roads and sidewalks reaches a temperature of +55°C. The most critical situation is observed with painted wooden benches, which heat up to +65°C in the sun. In the shade, the temperature of the benches corresponds to the environment and is about +35-36°C. Green lawns turned out to be the coolest surfaces: +27°C in the shade and +37-38°C in the sun.
Heat in city apartments
In conditions of abnormal heat, the upper floors of multi-storey buildings turn into real steam rooms. On the 9th floor of the western side of the house, not protected by trees, even with the blinds closed, the air temperature reaches +33.3°C. The situation is aggravated by periodic power outages, which prevent residents from using air conditioners to cool indoor air.

What a horror! 🥵 My apartment is on the 7th floor, yesterday the thermometer showed +35°C. The air conditioner can't cope and it's impossible to sleep. How do you cope with this heat?
Hans
Olivia, I understand you! I live on the 10th floor, it’s a real oven. I save myself with a cold shower before bed and a fan. It also helps to wet the sheet and lie on it - cool and pleasant 😌
Sophie
Guys, have you tried gluing foil to windows? They say it helps reflect the sun's rays and reduces the temperature in the apartment by several degrees. I'm thinking of trying it 🤔
Pedro
Sophie, great idea with the foil! 👍 I also noticed that it helps to keep the windows closed during the day and open wide at night. Also, I drink a lot of water with mint and lemon - it’s very refreshing!

Ugh, we've come in large numbers here with our advice! Previously, we lived without air conditioning, and nothing happened. There's no need to whine, it's summer, what did you want? Toughen up, otherwise you’ll look like muslin young ladies. 😤

Giovanni, why so rude? The heat is really abnormal, and people are having a hard time. Hans, thanks for the advice with the sheets, I’ll definitely try it! I’ve also heard about cooling body gels, has anyone tried them?
Anna
Olivia, I use this gel, it helps a lot! 😊 I also advise you to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, especially watermelon - it both cools and quenches your thirst. In general, maybe we should think about global warming? This heat is abnormal 🌡️
Jakub
Anna, I agree about global warming. Something needs to be done! Maybe we can organize a tree planting campaign in the city? They will lower the temperature at least a little. Who agrees? 🌳🌳🌳
