Disney and Pixar used 2017 Apple Watch dial animation for Toy Story teaser 5", sparking discussions about the film's creativity and development stage.
Animation scandal
Unexpected similarity
The recently presented teaser for the fifth part of "Toy Story" caused an unexpected reaction from viewers. It turned out that the animation used in the video is almost identical to that used for the Apple Watch dial back in 2017. It is interesting to note that the fourth part of the franchise was released only two years after the appearance of this animation on smart watches.
Teaser Contents
The video, released by Disney and Pixar over the weekend, opens with a shot of a metal hand lifting a toy alien from three eyes. Then your favorite characters sequentially appear and disappear in the frame: Woody, Buzz and Jessie.
Detecting similarities
Dylan McDonald, head of SunApps, was the first to notice the amazing similarity of the animations. He noted that the only significant difference in the teaser was the new blue background, replacing the black one used on the Apple Watch. This observation was later confirmed by an Apple intern working on the Apple Maps project.
Stealing the idea for this from a friend but yeah these are literally just the animations from the watchOS 4 Toy Story Apple Watch face
They even look like they've had a back background edited out https://t.co/aGlrI7YgV1 pic.twitter.com/cvk63GuJdS

Public reaction
The discovered similarity caused a mixed reaction on the Internet community. Some users accused Pixar and Disney of lack of creativity and laziness. Others have suggested that this may be due to the early stage of development of the cartoon. It's worth noting that not all the shots in the teaser were borrowed: for example, the opening shot with the alien and the penultimate shot, where Buzz leaves the frame, were new.
Premiere date
According to preliminary information, the premiere of Toy Story 5 is scheduled for June 19, 2026.
Pixar and Apple Connection
It is important to mention the close ties between Pixar and Apple. Previously, the studio was headed by Steve Jobs, who also invested $5 million in it. In March 1991, Jobs became the full owner of Pixar. Shortly thereafter, Disney entered into a three-film deal with Pixar. The first of these films was the original Toy Story. On January 24, 2006, Jobs sold Pixar to Disney for $7.4 billion.
History of the Franchise
Toy Story, released in 1995, was the first feature-length film created entirely using computer animation. This cartoon won the love of millions of viewers and spawned three sequels: Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010) and Toy Story 4 (2019). The franchise as a whole generated $3.03 billion in worldwide box office receipts. The fourth installment grossed $1.07 billion, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song for Randy Newman's "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" and won a statuette for Best Animated Feature Film.
