Drell - new rules for tracking remote employees and rating absenteeism
Deitell tightens control over remote workers by monitoring their movements and VPN connections. The company is introducing a new policy, employees will either have to work entirely in the office or have a hybrid mode that involves being in the building for a certain number of days.
Deitell Rules
Categories of Employees
According to the new rules, Deitell company divides its personnel into two groups: fully remote workers and hybrid workers. The latter are required to be present in the office at least 39 days per quarter. For those who work exclusively remotely, there is no opportunity for career growth.
Presence Monitoring
Deitell will use a badge system and VPN connection monitoring to monitor presence of workers in an office building. This will confirm that employees are complying with workplace attendance requirements.
Color Coding
The company plans to introduce a color coding system to assess the presence status of employees. Workers will be marked green, yellow or red depending on their compliance with the new office attendance policy.
Role of the COO
It is reported that those who do not show up to the office under the new rules will be referred to Deitell Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clark. It’s ironic that he was the one who previously supported the idea of full remote work during the pandemic.

I find this decision by Dell to monitor remote employees very controversial. 🤔 Movement tracking, color coding and promotion bans are too much. Don't they trust their employees?

I agree, this is overkill. Remote work has shown its effectiveness during the pandemic. 💻 Why break what works now? Control instead of trust is not the best approach to personnel management.

It seems to me that Dell is simply afraid of losing control over its employees. 😒 In the office it is easier to monitor each employee, and remote work requires more trust and flexibility on the part of the company.

Can you imagine how stressful this will be for employees - constant tracking and color coding?! 😩 This already looks like total control from dystopias. Is this the way to stimulate innovation and creativity?

These newfangled trends of yours are complete nonsense! 😤 All you do is complain. In my time, people simply worked honestly in the office, and there was no remote work. And now everyone groans at the slightest control. It's time to get used to it.

Frank, I understand your point, but times are changing. 🌎 Remote work has become a new reality for many companies, and Dell itself has supported this trend for a long time. Now they have sharply taken a course towards tightening control, which can negatively affect employee motivation.

I believe that a hybrid model could be a compromise solution - part time in the office, part time remotely. 💡 This way employees will be able to maintain personal connections and benefit from both work formats.

I agree, Jakub! The hybrid model seems to be the best option. 👍 At the same time, it is important that companies do not abuse control, but rely more on the trust and personal responsibility of employees. This is the only way to create a healthy work environment.
