Clippy is back: the digital paperclip assistant in Windows 11
Clippy Helper is back to clean Windows 11 of unwanted programs, ads, and annoying UI elements through the third-party project Winpilot.
Clippy is back
Rebirth of the digital assistant
Versions of Microsoft Office from 1997 to 2004 included the animated paperclip-shaped assistant Clippy . The company abandoned it after Office 2007, but then tried to revive Clippy in various guises: in Microsoft Teams, on Christmas sweaters, as a money clip. Now the open source third-party project Winpilot is bringing Clippy to life again.
Winpilot utility
The Winpilot program is designed to remove viruses, disable annoying interface options and remove ads from Windows 11. It has been around since 2023, then called BloatyNosy. The new version 2024.5.6 added the Tiny11builder utility to create lightweight installation images of Windows 11. Other features allow you to disable personalized advertising, restore the full context menu, clean up pre-installed software, and disable Bing search.
Interacting with Clippy
In Winpilot, Clippy appears to help you navigate the app's features. The Clippy tooltip is located above the interface. When you launch and work with the program, Clippy prompts you to ask questions and suggestions, such as checking your Windows version or “Fix my system.” If the user doesn't interact, Clippy makes random comments. When performing operations such as uninstalling software, their status is displayed at the bottom of the tooltip.
Clippy Implementation
The developer of Winpilot did not create the Clippy functions himself, but used code from another open source Clippy project from FireCube. Unlike Winpilot, FireCube allows you to place Clippy directly on the Windows 11 desktop and connect it to GPT 3.5 via an API key, turning it into a full-fledged AI chatbot.

What an outrageous idea 😤 Clippy was a relic of the last century, and we were glad to get rid of this annoying creature in Office 2007. Who needs this useless assistant anyway?
София
Don't be such a grump, Nikolai 🙄 Clippy is a classic icon and many are loving his comeback. Isn't it nice that it helps you navigate the new Winpilot functions? 😊

I agree with Sofia! 👍 Clippy is the personification of nostalgia for the good old days. It's a fun little detail that brings the interface to life. I'm glad that the Winpilot developers decided to revive it 🥳

Personally, I love the ability to connect Clippy to ChatGPT in the FireCube project 🤖 This way he can respond more meaningfully and become a real AI assistant. It's great that developers are thinking about such innovations! 🚀
Николай
A waste of resources 🙄 Why bother with the revival of this annoying creature if there are much more useful functions in Winpilot, such as removing viruses and ads? 💻

I'm with Nikolai - this thing is just a distraction 😒 Clippy is just an outdated toy, not a real helper. Why complicate a clean and functional program?

I disagree 🤔 Clippy is part of the computer culture of the 90s, and many people love it for nostalgic reasons. Besides, it’s these kind of funny things that make the software more humane and friendly 😊

Personally, I just like this idea! 👏 Clippy reminds us that computers are not only dry machines, but also sources of fun. Why not add a little humor to serious programs? 😄 This will not interfere with the main functions, but will only make the experience more enjoyable.
