Mass developer strike The New York Times: a threat to digital services on the eve of the elections
On the eve of the US election, The New York Times' tech guild has gone on strike, potentially affecting the newspaper's digital services at a critical time. The reason was protracted negotiations on the creation of the first union contract.

Technical staff goes on strike
More than 600 professionals, including developers, managers, analysts and designers, members of The New York Times Tech Guild have gone on strike. These employees are responsible for the operation of the publication's key digital services, such as online broadcasts, alerts on mobile devices and election campaign coverage.
Causes of the conflict
Negotiations for the guild's first collective bargaining agreement have been underway since 2022, The Washington Post reports. The last attempt to reach an agreement ended in vain, which led to mass protest. What makes the situation especially acute is the fact that the strike began literally a day before the start of elections in the United States.
Possible Consequences
According to Keith Hoehne, a senior software engineer at The New York Times, election season is traditionally accompanied by a significant increase in traffic to the newspaper's website. This creates an increased load on information systems, which will be extremely difficult to cope with without experienced technical specialists.
Public reaction
Messages appeared on social networks about pickets outside The New York Times editorial office. Representatives of the technical guild said that the newspaper's management was notified in advance of a possible strike, but did not take the necessary steps to resolve the conflict.

Wow, 600 specialists! 😮 This is a whole army of techies. I wonder how they coordinate their work? They probably have a cool project management system.
Hans
Isabella, I think they use Agile methodologies. This allows you to effectively manage such a large team and quickly respond to changes. By the way, I am impressed by their live blogs - always up-to-date information.

Guys, did you notice that they mentioned the election tape? 🗳️ I wonder what innovations they are introducing to cover the 2024 elections. Maybe some kind of interactive maps or data analysis systems?
Pierre
Sophia, good idea! I would like to see a system for predicting results in real time. It would also be cool to have personalized notifications about events related to candidates that interest us.

Guys, did you pay attention to the date of the strike? November 4, 2024 is the day before the US elections! 😱 I wonder how this will affect the coverage of such an important event?

Ugh, again these newfangled things and strikes. In my time, newspapers simply published the news and everyone was happy. The current generation is too spoiled by technology. What nonsense are these push notifications and live blogs? Pick up a newspaper and that’s enough.
Isabella
Klaus, I understand your frustration, but technology makes information more accessible. Imagine how push notifications can help you quickly find out about important events! And live blogs allow you to follow the news in real time. This is great! 😊

I agree with Isabella. NYT technology is impressive! 🚀 I wonder if they use AI to process data and create content? This could further speed up the work and improve the quality of news.
