The return of tiles in Windows 11: a new look at the Start menu
Microsoft introduces a revolutionary update to the Start menu in Windows 11, bringing back the concept of live tiles from Windows 8 in the new application category format.
Windows 11 Update
New Category Mode
Windows 11 Beta testers now have access to an innovative category view in the Start menu. This feature evokes nostalgia for the live tiles familiar to Windows 8 users.
Sorting capabilities
Innovation allows you to organize installed applications into groups . While the feature is still hidden in the latest beta, enthusiasts can enable it using third-party software like ViveTool.
Activation process
To access the updated menu, you must install Windows 11 build 22635.4010. ViveTool is available on GitHub. After entering special commands and restarting the computer, the new mode becomes available without affecting already assigned programs.
It looks like another Start menu > All apps view option is coming soon: Category view. Present in build 22635.3930, with some not yet functional categories.
Also, you'll be able to switch between the existing alphabetical and new grid/category views using a dropdown menu. https://t.co/qFtcTm4BnB pic.twitter.com/ABtXZJ2Irl

New menu structure
Each new menu folder can accommodate up to four application icons. The system automatically distributes programs into categories, some of which are partially filled, while others have subcategories. Most of the pre-installed applications are from Microsoft. The program is launched with one click on the shortcut.
Similarities with the past
The design is reminiscent of the concept of Live Tiles from Windows 8, which could display the number of notifications and partial content. There is currently no information about additional features of the new tiles. Presumably Windows uses a JSON file to host applications. It remains unclear whether the mode will be compatible with apps outside the Microsoft Store.
Development prospects
It is expected that a new program sorting mode may be included in the Windows 11 24H2 release.

Wow, it's almost like live tiles from Windows 8! 😮 I wonder if this will be really convenient or just another attempt by Microsoft to bring back old ideas?
Hans
Yes, Isabella, I noticed the similarities too! 🤔 But I think it might be useful for those who like to organize their apps. Especially if you can customize the categories yourself.
Pierre
I have already tried this feature through ViveTool. To be honest, it still looks damp. But there is potential, especially if they add the ability to create your own categories. 🛠️
Sophia
Pierre, do you think this will really improve the user experience? I'm a little doubtful that I will use this function often. 🤷♀️

It's all nonsense. Once again Microsoft is trying to reinvent the wheel. It would be better to start optimizing the system than such useless decorations. It will only waste computer resources.
Isabella
Klaus, don't be such a pessimist! 😄 Maybe this is really convenient for some users. Although I agree that optimization is also important.
Hans
And I think this could be especially useful for beginners or those who have many applications. It is easier to find the program you need if they are grouped by meaning. 🔍
Sophia
Hans, you're right! 👍 I thought that this could be very convenient for a work computer - you can immediately see all the necessary programs in one category. I hope Microsoft will finalize this feature for release.
