New approaches to removing video cards
Removing the video card from the motherboard is often a difficult task. However, leading manufacturers Asus and MSI have developed innovative solutions to make this process easier.
Traditionally, to avoid damage, it was recommended to support the slot, release the latch and carefully remove the sometimes very large graphics accelerator. Now, motherboard manufacturers offer more convenient options: the ejection mechanism is replaced with a button or is completely absent in its usual form.
Innovations from Asus
For the latest line of AMD 800 chipsets, Asus has introduced the PCIe Q-Release Slim GPU unlocking feature. This mechanism is integrated directly into the slot and prevents the video card from coming free when trying to remove it from the center or right side. However, if the card is removed from the connector panel, the Q-Release mechanism will easily release it.
MSI's Approach
MSI demonstrates an alternative way to remove the video card. Motherboards for Intel Arrow Lake-S processors will be equipped with an unlocking mechanism with a more convenient button. This technology, called EZ PCIe Release, was demonstrated on the Z890 MPG EDGE board. It is expected that other manufacturers such as Gigabyte AORUS, Biostar VALKYRIE and ASRock Taichi will also introduce similar solutions.
Additional power options
MSI motherboards with AMD 800 series chipsets have a dedicated 8-pin power connector on the bottom parts. This connector is capable of providing up to 150W of additional power to the graphics card. When combined with the PCIe slot, total power can reach up to 225W without the need for additional cables from the power supply. According to MSI, this connector is designed keeping in mind the needs of future next-generation graphics cards.
