Apple vs EU: Litigation around the App Store and the Digital Markets Act
European Union regulators have tentatively ruled that Apple's App Store policies violate competition rules aimed at promoting fair competition in digital markets. A new investigation has also been launched into Apple's support for alternative platforms for distributing iOS applications in the EU.
App Store Policy
Violation of EU legislation
Representatives of the European Commission in a preliminary decision stated that the App Store rules do not comply with the requirements of the EU Law digital markets (DMA). This regulation is intended to ensure healthy competition on digital platforms. According to the DMA, giant companies called "gatekeepers" must provide developers with the ability to redirect users to alternative services outside of their own app stores for free.
Apple's position
Apple does not agree with the preliminary conclusions of the European Commission and claims that its The policy complies with the new EU requirements. Apple spokesman Peter Ajemian said the company has made changes in recent months to comply with the DMA, allowing developers to direct users to external sites to make purchases at competitive prices. The company intends to continue cooperation with the European Commission.
Possible sanctions
Apple has until March 2025 to respond to the EC's preliminary assessment before making a final decision. If a violation is found, the corporation could face a fine of up to 10% of annual global revenue, which would have been about $38 billion based on last year's data. If the violation is repeated, the fine could increase to 20%.
New investigation
In addition, the European Commission has opened a new investigation into Apple's support of alternative app stores for iOS. The investigation focuses on controversial fees for core technologies, the complex process of installing third-party platforms and Apple's requirements for developers.

Finally, the EU has taken up the task of regulating Apple's monopoly on the App Store! 🙌 A long-awaited event for all application developers. Maybe now we can buy and sell through alternative stores without extra fees.

Hurray, this is great news! 🎉 More competition means better prices for consumers. Apple has been dictating its terms for too long, it’s high time to rein it in.

I agree that monopoly is harmful to the market. But Apple has always been known for its closed ecosystem. It will be interesting to see how they adapt to the new DMA rules. 🤔

Do you think Apple will really open up access to alternative app stores? In my opinion, they will resist with all their might, just so as not to reduce their profits. 💰

Phew, all these newfangled things again. 😒 In my time, everything was much simpler - buy a phone and use it. And now these endless application stores, updates... A complete headache!

I don't agree, Hans. 🙅♀️ Technologies are developing, and we need to keep up with the times. Competition between app stores is great, users will have more choice.

Yes, Martha is right. 💯 Freedom of choice is good. I think we'll see more independent app stores other than the App Store in the future. Maybe even with your own unique offers!
