Globalstar Investment
In 2022, Apple introduced the Emergency SOS satellite calling feature for the iPhone 14 series, using the infrastructure of the American provider Globalstar. It was recently reported that the technology giant has invested $1.1 billion to expand Globalstar's satellite capacity as part of a new agreement.
Strategic Partnership
In addition, Apple acquired a 20% stake in Globalstar, investing $400 million. This investment is expected to significantly increase Globalstar's ability to process satellite messages from iPhone owners.
Free period of use
Initially, the Emergency SOS service via satellite was offered free for two years, but this period was extended by another year. Thus, iPhone 14 users who purchased the device immediately after release will be able to use the service until November 2025.
New communication options
With the release of iOS 18, Apple announced a two-way messaging feature via satellite when there is no cellular service. This option is available on iPhone 14 and later models from select carriers in the US and Canada. There's no word yet on whether Apple will charge for access to satellite messaging after the free period ends next year.

Wow, Apple is investing over a billion in satellite communications! 🛰️ They seem to be serious about developing this technology. I wonder how this will affect future iPhone models?
Klaus
Yes, Sophia, that's impressive! I think we'll see more advanced communication features in future models. Maybe even full calls via satellite? 📞 Although, of course, this will require even greater investment.

Klaus, sounds great! But I'm more interested in how this will affect the price of the iPhone. Hopefully Apple won't raise prices too much because of this investment 💸

Guys, did you know that this feature has already saved several lives? 🆘 I read a story about a tourist who was saved thanks to Emergency SOS. This is really cool stuff!
Giovanni
Ha, another expensive toy from Apple. Why do we need satellite communications when regular communications are enough? It would be better to improve the battery so that the phone lasts longer. All this is unnecessary show-off and waste.
Sophia
Giovanni, don't be such a skeptic! 😄 This is a breakthrough in the field of security. Imagine how this could help people in remote areas or during emergency situations.
Anastasia
I wonder if this technology will spread to other countries? 🌍 For now it is only available in the USA and Canada. It would be great to have this feature in Europe too!
Klaus
Anastasia, I agree! I hope that the expansion of the Globalstar network will allow us to launch the service in other regions. This could truly be a global breakthrough in communications and security. 🚀
