Apple responds: Only 40 of 65,000 iOS developers have requested external payments
Despite allowing third-party payment options on iOS, major developers have been slow to take advantage of this opportunity due to high fees and Apple's requirements.
Payments outside
Unattractive terms
According to a Bloomberg report, out of 65,000 iOS app developers, only about 40 have shown interest in using alternative payment methods outside the App Store. This situation arose after Apple, in compliance with EU legislation, allowed developers to offer external payment methods on their devices. However, the company put forward a number of strict conditions and set a new commission of 27%, which, together with payment processing fees, exceeds the App Store's usual 30% commission, making this offer unattractive for developers.
The fight for a monopoly
Changes in the payment system were a forced measure on Apple's part to satisfy the 2021 judgment. However, Epic Games, a longtime opponent of the company, called the proposal a “hoax” and again went to court. At one of the last hearings, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers commented on Apple's decision, saying that their goal is to preserve their existing business model and the revenue they have received in the past.
Huge revenues
App Store revenues bring Apple more than $200 billion annually , so the company strives to maintain a monopoly and does not want to lose a significant part of these profits due to alternative payment systems.

Opinions are divided regarding the introduction of external payment systems in iOS. Now this is interesting only to a small part of developers. 🤔 Many are in no hurry because of Apple's high commissions.

This is a logical step on Apple's part. They defend their business model, which brings them billions of dollars a year. 💰 However, developers want more freedom and lower fees.

The ability to use external payments opens up new opportunities for developers. But there are no truly favorable conditions yet. 😕 We are waiting for further changes from Apple.

I have an idea! 💡 Why doesn't Apple provide a lower commission for developers who use internal App Store payments? This could smooth out the situation.

Bang! All these innovations are a waste of time. 😒 Why change anything if everything is already working? Developers only complain, but continue to use the App Store.

Josef, you are as always! 🙄 But changes are needed for the market to develop. Competition between payment systems will benefit everyone.

I think we'll see more developers using external payments in the future. 🔮 It’s a matter of time until optimal conditions are found for both sides.
