Tesla Model Y test drive: analyst barely avoids an accident with autopilot
Testing of the Tesla Full Self-Driving autopilot by an analyst revealed a number of problems with the safety and reliability of the system, despite Elon Musk's claims about its perfection.
Tesla Autopilot: tests
Analyst's mixed experience
William Stein, an analyst at Truist Securities, decided to personally check out Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) autopilot system after Elon Musk said it needed to be tested to fully understand it. The results of the Model Y test drive were very alarming.
Dangerous situation on the road
During the test, Stein encountered a critical situation at a crossroads. The car suddenly accelerated when the car in front failed to complete the turn. Only thanks to the quick reaction of the analyst was it possible to avoid a collision.
Repeated tests and conclusions
Stein conducted two tests of FSD: in early April and later in the same month. The initial impression was mixed: "impressive, but not yet practical." A second test showed no improvement, perhaps even worsening system performance.
Advantages and disadvantages of FSD
Despite good adaptation to road conditions, the system showed serious shortcomings. Particularly alarming was the fact that FSD allows the driver to be distracted for long periods of time without warning.
Testing Critical Points
In addition to the intersection incident, Stein noted several other problematic situations. The autopilot was unable to respond correctly to a police officer’s signal to give way to a funeral procession. There have also been cases of illegal lane changes on a winding section of road with prohibitory markings.
FSD update and market reaction
Elon Musk announced the release of an updated version of FSD 12.5.1, which will be distributed throughout 10 days. The announcement helped support Tesla's stock price, which had previously fallen significantly. Despite the criticism, Morgan Stanley still views Tesla as a top performer among U.S. auto stocks.

Wow, this is news about Tesla! 😮 I heard that their autopilot is quite advanced, but the incident with the analyst makes me wonder. Has anyone tested FSD yet?
Sophie
Yes, Liam, I recently drove a friend's Model 3 with FSD. The impressions are mixed - sometimes it works great, but there are times when you want to take control. I think the technology is still raw for full autonomy. 🚗💨
Hans
Sophie, interesting! How does FSD handle parking? I've heard that this is one of the most difficult tasks for an autopilot. 🅿️
Sophie
Hans, FSD's parking is not bad, especially in large parking lots. But in cramped urban environments, sometimes you have to intervene. Still, people still cope better in difficult situations. 😅

Guys, don’t you think Musk is in too much of a hurry to introduce FSD? 🤔 Maybe we should do some more work on safety before releasing it onto the roads?
Viktor
All this hype about autopilots is bullshit. A normal driver can cope just fine without any computers. They only lure people out of money with their fashionable toys. 😒
Liam
Viktor, I understand your skepticism, but progress cannot be stopped. Autopilots can significantly reduce the number of accidents caused by human error. Yes, the technology is still imperfect, but the potential is huge! 🚀

I agree with Liam! 👍 While the analyst's case is concerning, there's no denying that Tesla is moving in the right direction. I wonder how quickly they can improve FSD to a truly safe level? 🤖🚗
