AMD threw down the gauntlet of Nvidia: new AI chips to conquer the market
AMD has unveiled new AI processors scheduled for release over the next two years in an effort to compete with market leader Nvidia in the segment.
AMD AI chips
New accelerators
The American semiconductor manufacturer AMD announced the release of innovative chips for artificial intelligence (AI ), designed to be a worthy alternative to competitor Nvidia's products. At the Computex 2024 exhibition, the company presented its plan for the release of powerful processors over the next two years.
Next steps
At the end of this year, the world will see the MI325X accelerator, which will be the first in a series of AMD's upcoming AI chips designed to compete with Nvidia. Now the latter controls about 80% of the semiconductor market for artificial intelligence. In 2025, AMD plans to release the MI350 series, which will have 35 times the performance of AI tasks compared to their current chips.
Revolutionary architecture
The most powerful will be the MI400 series with a completely new Next architecture, announced before the release in 2026. As such, AMD intends to update its AI processors annually, echoing Nvidia's approach. According to the company's forecasts, sales of their AI chips will reach $4 billion in 2024, which is $500 million more than previous expectations.
Central processors
In addition, AMD presented new central processors that will appear on the market in the second half of 2024. They will be able to be used together with video cards to improve the performance of AI on personal computers.
Competition is intensifying
Recently, technology giants Intel and Google have also announced their developments in the field of artificial intelligence, seeking to capture a larger share of the market. Both companies aim to offer an alternative to Nvidia solutions.
