AMD is losing billions: the conflict with laptop manufacturers is escalating
AMD is facing criticism from laptop makers over its shift in focus to the enterprise sector and AI, leading to supply and support issues for consumer products.
AMD problems
Deteriorating relations with OEM partners
According to consulting firm AC Analysis, AMD is facing serious difficulties in its relations with laptop manufacturers. The reason for this was AMD’s reorientation towards developing solutions for artificial intelligence and data centers, which led to the so-called “Ice Age of the Cold War” between the company and its partners.
Billions of losses and discontent of manufacturers
According to information from ComputerBase, manufacturers are complaining about a decrease in the level of cooperation with AMD, which leads to significant financial losses due to falling sales volumes. OEM partners complain about AMD's "misunderstandings, broken promises and overall negative attitude," comparing the current situation to Intel's behavior during its market dominance.
Problems with supplies and assortment
Despite consumer interest in the new AMD Strix Point processors, equipment manufacturers are remaining reserved about them. This is due to supply issues and limited supply. In the US market, only three brands - Asus, HP and MSI - offer laptops with these processors, and the selection is very limited.
Comparison with competitors
Unlike AMD, the launch of Qualcomm Snapdragon X has attracted great interest from both the public and laptop manufacturers. Seven brands have already released 12 different models, with more to come. Intel, in turn, is represented even more widely - new Lunar Lake processors are used in 80 laptop models.
Slow market share growth
Despite difficulties with manufacturers, AMD continues to slowly increase its share of the laptop market. It has now reached 19%, but the growth rate remains low - just a few tenths of a percent per quarter for several years.
