A24 created post-apocalyptic posters using neural networks for “Rise of the States”
As part of the promotional campaign for the film States Uprising, A24 used artificial intelligence-generated images showing post-apocalyptic scenes from various US cities. However, none of these scenes were shown in the film itself, which caused dissatisfaction among viewers.
States in Rebellion
Advertising campaign with AI images
Five advertising posters for the film "States in Rebellion" from A24 studio show apocalyptic scenes in iconic American cities engulfed in conflict: a giant ball among the smoking ruins of Las Vegas, a floating artillery installation on a lake near Los Angeles, boats with refugees on the river in Chicago, and so on. These images hint at large-scale destruction of famous landmarks, but nothing of the kind is shown in the film itself.
Negative reaction from viewers
Many viewers criticized the use of images created by artificial intelligence, pointing out the discrepancy between the promotional materials and the content of the film. In the comments under the studio's Instagram post, fans expressed dissatisfaction, noting that the studio was "selling a film that doesn't exist." Inaccuracies in the depiction of objects were also criticized, for example, the Marina Towers in Chicago are shown on opposite sides of the river, although in reality they are located on the same bank.
Studio Explains
An A24 spokesperson explained the use of AI imagery as a desire to "help viewers better imagine the nationwide impact of a fictitious war." According to him, the images are inspired by the plot of the film and are intended to create a dystopian atmosphere around famous cultural monuments.
The film's success at the box office
Despite the scandal with promotional materials, the film "Rise of the States" directed by Alex Garland had a successful start at the box office, collecting a studio record $25. 7 million. The film tells about the events of the American Civil War, starring Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny and other famous actors. From April 11, the film is available in Ukrainian cinemas.

Interestingly, none of these post-apocalyptic scenes on the posters were shown in the film! It seems that marketers have greatly exaggerated the scale of destruction. 🤔
Елена
Yes, the filmmakers decided to embellish reality a little. Although floating weapons installations in Los Angeles sound very intriguing! 🚢⚔️

I think using AI to create posters like this is overkill. Why deceive the audience? I'm sure the film is already interesting! 🎥
Мария
I agree, such posters create false expectations. But on the other hand, they attract attention and make you think about the plot of the film. 🧐

Eh, again Hollywood marketers want to amaze everyone with the scale of destruction. But the end result is an ordinary story about war and survival. I hope the film still turns out to be interesting! 💥

As a true German, I do not approve of such marketing gimmicks. They mislead and disappoint viewers. It would be better to focus on the quality of the script and acting! 😠

Oh, those Hollywood posters! They are like good wine - aromatic and attractive, but do not always correspond to the taste of the film itself. 🍷 I'm looking forward to watching it though!

Hi all! For that matter, I think that AI posters look quite stylish and impressive. 👌 Even if they don’t quite correspond to the real film, they still catch your eye!

Bah! All these newfangled trends using AI in cinema are complete nonsense! 🙄 In our time, films were made without any neural networks, and no matter, the films turned out great. Bullshit!

Oh, this old Karl, always dissatisfied with everything! 😄 But I believe that the use of AI in the film industry is a progressive step. Although not always successful, it is an interesting experiment!

I am a Polish patriot, and I like films like this about war and destruction! 💪 The posters may be slightly embellished, but they perfectly convey the atmosphere and make the heart beat faster.

As a Ukrainian, I can't help but notice the fact that one of the posters shows refugees on boats. 🚣♀️ A very relevant and painful topic for our time...

Hey guys! Let's not forget that cinema is the art of illusion. 🎥 Even if these posters don’t quite correspond to reality, they make us dream and fantasize. This is great, isn't it?

I think the filmmakers just wanted to attract as much attention to their project as possible. 👀 And posters with spectacular war scenes are a great way to hook viewers. Well, whether to be disappointed or not is everyone’s personal choice!
