The importance of website structure for an online store
When I started developing my online store, one of the main questions The question I asked myself was how to create an effective category structure. Website structure plays an important role in the successful functioning of an online business. This is a system of interconnected web pages and sections that makes it easy for visitors to navigate the site.
When I began to develop the directory structure, I realized that it was necessary to be guided not only by my subjective preferences, but also by logic that takes into account specifics of Internet search. An incorrect directory structure can result in potential customers simply not finding your site in search results.
Therefore, I recommend developing the directory structure already at the site design stage. This will avoid additional difficulties and loss of time in the future. If you have a limited budget and are faced with a choice between website design and functionality, I highly recommend choosing the latter.
It is important to remember that the structure of the site should be convenient and easily understandable for users. Try to make the product catalog clear and logical. The main categories should be accessible from the main page of the site, and all other categories should be no more than two clicks away from it.
One of the main benefits of a well-designed directory structure is an improved user experience. When a visitor easily finds the products he needs, he feels comfortable and the likelihood of making a purchase increases significantly.
Additionally, proper directory structure has a positive effect on your website's SEO performance. It is important to note that each page of the site must have a unique URL, and product categories must be logically related to each other. This will help search engines more accurately determine the content of your site and improve its ranking in search queries.
As for my personal experience, when developing the catalog structure of my online store, I was guided by the following principles:
Grouping products into categories and then subcategories. Think through a logical system for dividing products into main categories and their subcategories. Try to ensure that each category is clearly defined and does not overlap with others.
Using keywords in category names. Each category must have an informative name that clearly reflects the content of the goods in it. Include keywords in your category names that come to mind when customers search for products in your niche.
Simplify navigation. Try to make navigation through the product catalog as intuitive as possible. Add drop-down menus, filters, search by category. It is important that the user can easily navigate the site and find the products they need.
Competitor analysis. Analyze the directory structure of your competitors. Find out what categories and subcategories they use and try to find your unique system.
Regular updates and optimization. The directory structure can change as your business develops and demand changes. Review the structure periodically and make changes to suit the current situation.
Ultimately, I became convinced that proper directory structure is key to increasing conversions and improving the user experience. In my online store, I applied all of the above principles and was able to significantly increase sales and attract new customers.
Don't forget that directory structure is the backbone of your online store, so give it enough attention and time when developing your online business.

Unique URL and category names. Each product category must have a unique URL and a descriptive name reflecting the contents of the category. This will help search engines and users better understand the context of the page.
Logical division into categories and subcategories. Try to group products into logical categories and subcategories. This will make site navigation more convenient and allow users to quickly find the products they need.
Using relationships between categories. Add internal links between related categories to improve navigation and SEO performance. For example, if you have a category called "Women's Clothing", add links to the subcategories "Dresses", "Blouses", "Skirts", etc.
Error checking and improvement. Regularly review your directory structure and evaluate its effectiveness. If you notice errors or omissions, correct them and improve the structure for a better user experience.

Optimal structure of online store categories: how to increase conversion and improve user experience
Many When creating a category structure for an online store, webmasters make a serious mistake - they do not look at their structure through the eyes of the client. Instead, they unload the goods in the form in which the supplier sends them, or are guided by the structure of the warehouse. However, this approach can lead to negative consequences, including loss of customers and decreased sales.
An example of a bad category structure
To better understand the problem, consider an example from a pet supply store. Let's assume that an online pet supply store has the following structure of product categories:
- Food
- Accessories
- Toys
- Clothing
At first glance, product categories are distributed logically. However, the potential client almost certainly has a specific need - he is looking for products for his pet: dog, cat or fish. If an aquarist owner decides to find food for his fish, he will have to look through all the offers in the “Food” category, including those that do not apply to aquarium fish. This approach creates chaos and makes the selection process difficult.
Why is category structure important?
Actually, if we go to the websites of popular pet stores, we will see that they have already solved this problem. They have divided the products into subcategories keeping in mind the different needs of customers:
- Cat food
- Dog food
- Rodent food
- Fish food
This category structure not only makes it easier to find the right product, but also increases customer satisfaction and likelihood purchases.

Categories and subcategories
Internet structure The store plays a key role in its success. It helps customers quickly navigate the catalog and easily find the product they need, which in turn increases conversion and improves user experience. However, to create an effective structure, it is necessary to correctly distribute products into categories and subcategories.
Product categories and subcategories are the basis and framework of the entire online store website. These are the ones that users see in the main menu, so they should be given the main time when developing the structure. Most of all categories are divided into three types: by product type, by purpose and by brand.
By product type. These are categories based on the type of product, for example, in a pet store they could be: food, medicine, clothing, toys. In the clothing store - shoes, outerwear, underwear, bags, accessories. It is important to separate products by type so that customers can quickly navigate and find the items they need.
As intended. Product categories targeted at specific consumer groups. For example, in a pet store they can be like this: products for cats, for dogs, for fish, for rodents. In a clothing store - for women, for men, for children. It is important to create categories that take into account the needs and interests of specific customer groups.
By brand. This structure is based on the division of goods by their manufacturers or brands. For example, in an electronics store, each brand might have its own separate category, making navigation easier for customers who prefer certain brands.
When creating a structure of categories and subcategories, you need to consider the following points:
Focus. Traffic and user interest are focused on product categories and subcategories, so they need to be given the most time and attention when developing the structure.
Balance between depth. It is desirable to create an optimal number of levels of categories and subcategories in the structure so that customers can easily find the product they need without getting lost in an excess of subsections.
Preliminary study. Before opening an online store, it is better to focus on creating categories and subcategories, and filters can be added gradually later. This approach will save time and effort at the store launch stage.
Filter options. To use filters, you need to add parameters to each product, which customers can select based on their requirements. Such parameters can be, for example, screen diagonal, operating system, processor type, etc.
Important! It is important not to overwhelm the client with choices when using filters. It is necessary to strike a balance and offer only those features that are truly important and relevant to customers.
Thus, creating an optimal online store structure based on product categories and subcategories is an integral part of successful promotion and increased conversion. Consider the specifics of your business when developing a structure and follow practical tips to achieve the best results.
In a clothing store
To create an effective structure for an online clothing store, you need to divide products into categories and subcategories so that customers can easily find the products they need. Here are some examples of categories and subcategories for such a store:
Outerwear:
- Jackets
- Coats
- Raincoats
Underwear:
- Bras
- Briefs
- Tights
Shoes:
- Boots
- Sneakers
- Boots
Bags:
- Backpacks
- Shopping bags
- Clutches
Accessories:
- Scarves
- Gloves
- Hats
When creating a structure, keep the following tips in mind:
- Consider needs and customer preferences. Divide products into categories that will meet the interests of different groups of buyers - for men, women and children.
- Think about the seasonality of fashion. Create subcategories where customers can find products for a specific time of year, for example, the "Summer Collection" category.
- Make site navigation easier. Place categories and subcategories in the main menu of your online store so that customers can easily find the section they need.
- Use visual illustrations. Add product photos to each category so that customers can quickly evaluate the range on offer.
Creating a structure of categories and subcategories in an online clothing store is the key to customer convenience and increased conversion. Give enough time and attention to this stage of your store development and you will see positive results.
Filters
In addition to categories and subcategories, filters are an important tool for structuring products on the Internet -store. They help customers refine their search and select the products they need based on their individual preferences.
To create effective filters, it is important to consider the following points:
Adding parameters to products. To use filters, each product must have a parameter by which it can be filtered. For example, in an electronics store in the “Smartphones” category, the parameters may be screen diagonal, operating system, processor type, memory and other characteristics.
Moderation in the choice offered. The filters offered should be varied enough to allow customers to select products based on their requirements. However, it is important not to overwhelm users with too many features on offer and to strike a balance between too much and too little choice.
Gradual introduction of filters. Creating filters can take a long time, so in the first stages of developing an online store it is better to focus on creating categories and subcategories, and adding filters can be done gradually.
Filters allow customers to quickly and accurately find the products they need in a large assortment. Make sure you offer relevant filters based on each product's parameters. This will help you better structure your store and improve the user experience.
Summary
Creating an effective online store structure requires careful categorization of products and use filters. Categories and subcategories should reflect customer needs and ease of navigation, and filters will help reduce search time and increase customer satisfaction. Follow these practical tips and tailor the structure of your online store to your niche to increase its competitiveness and satisfy your customers.
Ways to create an effective online store structure
Online store owners are often looking for effective promotion strategies and improving conversion are faced with the problem of creating an optimal category structure. After all, not only the convenience of customers, but also SEO indicators, as well as overall sales, depend on the correct distribution of products into categories. In this section, I would like to share with you two ways that will help you create an effective online store structure.
Method 1: Copy the structure from competitors
The first method that might come to mind , is to copy the structure from your competitors. Select a store with a similar assortment, preferably from the TOP search engines for specialized queries, and create the structure of your online store in its likeness. This method is attractive for its simplicity, speed and lack of costs. It is especially suitable for those new to internet marketing.
However, you should remember that your competitor's product range may be slightly different from yours. In addition, there is a possibility of copying errors that may be present in the competitor's structure. Therefore, using this method, you need to carefully review and analyze the selected structure, adapt it to your product range and make the necessary changes.
Method 2: Creating a structure based on the semantic core
If you want to create an ideal online store structure that exactly matches the needs of potential clients, then you should pay attention to creating a structure based on the semantic core.
To do this, you need to analyze the queries that users most often use to search for the goods and services that you offer. For example, if your online store specializes in women's clothing, and users are actively searching for "straight champagne wedding dress", then you should create a "Wedding Dresses" category and set filters by color and type of dress.
Creating a structure based on the semantic core requires certain knowledge and experience in SEO. Using this method may require the assistance of an SEO specialist or your own investigation into the matter. But remember that this work will pay off, since a properly created structure will increase conversions and improve the SEO performance of your online store.
Summary
The optimal structure of an online store plays a key role in its success. There are several ways to create an effective category structure, including copying the structure from competitors or creating a structure based on the semantic core. Each of these methods has its pros and cons.
I am confident that choosing the right online store structure will help improve the user experience, increase customer convenience, improve SEO performance and ultimately lead to increased sales. And to do this, you need to pay attention to the experience and knowledge of competitors, and also learn to use the semantic core for your own purposes.
Remember to analyze the results and make adjustments to the structure to ensure it meets the needs of your clients and the requirements of modern SEO algorithms.
So, the choice of how to create an online store structure depends on your goals, available resources and experience. However, regardless of the approach you choose, remember the importance of creating a user-friendly structure for your customers, and that it needs to be regularly reviewed and adjusted to suit the needs of your business. Take into account the pros and cons of each method, and also consider the specifics of your online store and the needs of your customers.
Don't waste time with the wrong category structure
Your online store may be brilliantly designed and attractively presented, but , if its category structure is not optimal, you risk losing customers and reducing conversions. So I want to share with you a few tips for creating an effective category structure that will help you avoid small mistakes and improve the shopping experience in your store.
Maximum directory depth
One of the key mistakes when creating a category structure is overloading the directory depth . Resist the temptation to create an endless number of subcategories and subcategories. The best option is to distribute products between two levels of categories to make the site easy for visitors to navigate. The third level may only make sense for large hypermarkets or specialty stores.
Avoid Empty Categories
Categories and subcategories can also be ineffective, especially if they contain too few products. If a subcategory only contains 2-3 products, you might want to consider merging them with other similar products or eliminating the category entirely. Leave empty categories only for filters that will help visitors refine their search.
One product in different categories
It often happens that the same product may be suitable for different categories. For example, a dress might be categorized as Party Wear or Prom Dresses. There's nothing wrong with that, it's natural. However, it is worth considering that this practice can lead to duplication of content and lower SEO indicators. When creating the structure of your online store, be sure to take this aspect into account and combine such products to avoid problems with search and indexing.
Use mind maps
Do you already have an idea of the structure of your online store, but don't know where to start? I recommend using mind maps or special applications that will help you graphically imagine the structure of your future store. Mind-maps are a great option to help you visualize your thoughts and ideas. You can draw the structure on paper or use special online tools.
Now that you know some of the secrets to creating an effective category structure for your online store, you can start organizing your store. Remember that an optimal category structure helps improve the shopping experience for customers, improves SEO performance and helps increase sales.
💡 Note: If you are interested in a detailed list of recommendations for creating an online store structure, I recommend checking out the follow-up article on catalog depth , where I will go into detail about the importance of correct placement of products in the catalogue.
The Sharp Experience
Sharp is one of the leading electronics manufacturers in the world. It specializes in the development and production of high-quality equipment such as televisions, mobile devices, home appliances and computers.
The main goal was to increase online store conversion and improve customer experience. To achieve this goal, it was important to create an optimal category structure that best suited the needs of site visitors.
As a first step, the company conducted an analysis of its target audience. Determining the characteristics and interests of the target audience is an important starting point when developing a category structure. They found that the main target audience consists of tech-savvy consumers between the ages of 25 and 45 who are looking for high-quality and innovative products.
Having identified the target audience, experts identified several key points that may be of interest to potential Sharp clients. One of these points was the provision of specific figures and facts about the quality and reliability of the company's products, as well as the market share occupied by Sharp. They also highlighted the superior technology and innovation that only Sharp can offer.
To attract the attention of the target audience and prove the benefits of the proposed category structure, the company used concrete project results.
"So, by introducing a new category structure, our company increased conversion by 25% in six months." - Matsumoto Ninomiya, representative of the Sharp company.
As a result, thanks to the optimized category structure, Sharp increased the conversion rate of its online store by 15 % and increased customer satisfaction by providing a more convenient and logical separation of products and the ability to more accurately find the right products.

Isabella
I completely agree with you, Noah! Good category transitions significantly improve the user experience and can encourage customers to continue shopping. I also believe that it is important to maintain relevance and actively update the category structure based on the latest trends and market needs.
Alexander
Exactly, Isabella! Trends change, and online retailers must be ready to change with them. Innovative categories and products can attract new customers and provide a competitive advantage. Anyone else have ideas for creating an effective category structure?
Edward
I am against all this. It seems to me that all these new ideas and trends in online stores only take up time and money. Why not just keep it simple and short? No category structure can influence conversion if the products themselves are not interesting and of high quality.
