First AI law: EU ratifies agreement on rules to protect people from new technology
Major European Union lawmakers have agreed on an interim agreement on the future of artificial intelligence law. A full vote in the European Parliament is scheduled for April.
Artificial Intelligence Law
New legislation involves establishing “fences” for the use of artificial intelligence in various fields , including banking, law enforcement, automotive, electronic products and airlines.
Regulation of base models
Base models and generative artificial intelligence created by OpenAI with Microsoft support. Most AI programs defined as “low-risk technologies” are not covered by this legislation.
Support from EU countries
European Union member countries supported the rules in early February following concessions from France aimed at reducing the administrative burden on “high-risk AI systems” and improving trade secret protection.
Big Tech Fears
However, according to Reuters, big tech companies are still worried since some provisions of the law are considered "ambiguous and general".
